After Playing to 0-0 Tie; Athens Wins Penalty Phase 5-3.
The RMS Eagles hosted the Athens’ Cougars at home on Monday evening, 3-30-26. Varsity kicked off at 5:30 for what proved to be an intense, physical game. The Eagles almost scored in the first half off of a corner with a header by Finn Shaffer that went over the goalie’s head soaring into goal when an Athens’ defender rushed from behind and headed it back out of the goal. Gustavo Lopez recorded a high diving save off of a direct kick in the far corner that kept the first half scoreless on both sides. The second half saw another scoreless half for both teams, despite multiple shots by the Eagles to give them an edge for a win. District rules dictate penalty kicks after a tie in a district game, so PK’s was what both teams went into. Athens started the PK’s off, with all 4 of their first shooters making the shots, despite Lopez narrowly missing 2 of the shots. The Eagles matched Athens shot for shot until the Eagles’ 4th shooter missed the PK. Athens sealed their 5th shot, so it ended the PK’s there before our 5th shooter could take his shot. Manny Juarez, Abriel Sanchez, and Aiden Leonard all made their PK’s for the Eagles, final score of 5-3 loss. Eagles record is now 2-5 (district record 1-4).
JV followed with high intensity, great passing, winning the balls through the midfield, and great through balls up top. Dylan Perez was the first to put us on the board, assist by RJ Ferguson, with Stephen Shaver recording an amazing save to end the 1st half 1-0 for the Eagles. The 2nd half came out with the Eagles even more aggressive and controlling the pace of the game, outshooting Athens 12 shots to 2 shots. Alex Santiago recorded the 2nd goal of the night with assist by Hutch Prudhomme. Iker Lopez added a 3rd and final goal with assist by Landen Fugate. JV finished with a win of 3-0, record of 5-3-2.
