Spring City, TN -- Spring City won over Philadelphia at home after opening the season on the road at Greenback in their previous game. Their season openers against Greenback on road were both wins with Lady Bulldogs winning 33-11 and Bulldogs winning 47-19. In those games Talaysia Smith led the Lady Bulldogs with 13 points and Mylez Ganskow led Bulldogs with 17 points.
Coaching the Lady Bulldogs this year is Craig Moser, former assistant coach for the RCHS football team for several years, but he has experience coaching basketball. Anthony Loden could be found on the Bulldog bench assisting Moser this year.
Against Philadelphia, both teams began slowly, but Spring City held a 7-4 lead at the end of quarter. Maddie Pritchett led an offensive rally in the 2nd quarter with 6 of the 14 points scored for the 21-8 lead at halftime. The Lady Bulldogs were able to get some always helpful experience for the second unit and finished with the 33-12 win to run their record to 2-0. Pritchett led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points and LayLay Smith was close behind with 8 points.
The Bulldogs used E. J. Casteneda's two 3-point baskets powered to an 11-3 first quarter lead. Harlan Thomas had a big night down low with a ton of rebounds and 6 second quarter points for the 21-5 lead. Five different players scored in the 3rd quarter as Bulldogs ran lead to 33-11. Final score for the game was 38-15.
Bulldogs lost 8 players from last year's team but have some talent back for 2024-25. E.J. Castenada, Harlan Thomas and Mylez Ganskow are a few of the core players coming back as 8th graders. Another new addition is first year head coach Eli Evans, who came to Rhea County this year as assistant coach for football. Eli graduated from University of the Cumberland in 2024 with a degree in Exercise Sports Science and coaching with a minor in Psychology. Evans is a P.E. teacher at SCMS where he also coached on the staff of Anthony Loden for football. Loden will be his assistant this year in basketball in a reversal of roles.
