Eagles Football Wins Against Tyner To Move to 5-3

Evensville, TN -- Rhea County hosted Tyner Academy on Friday October 25, 2024. The 3A Region 3 team came in with a 5-3 record and tied with Chattanooga Central with 3-1 Region records at 3-1. Meigs County leads that region with a 4-0 region record. Eagles were coming off a bye week and looking forward to a big region game with East Hamilton on November 1 on Senior Night.

The Eagles began the game showing some rust after the off week and Tyner came in with good energy and looked a little quicker during the early part of the first quarter, but Eagles were tied 3-3 after the quarter with Fugate and Thomas trading field goals.

Second quarter was even 7-7 for a 10-10 halftime score. Anderson scored a Tyner touchdown on a 2-yard run and Ford countered with a 3-yard run for the Eagles. Neither team scored in the third quarter. Tyner quarterback Tyler Anderson scored on a 1-yard run and a couple of minutes later Carr scored on a 1-yard run with 5:13 left in regulation.

After the game ended in a tie 17-17, Tyner won the toss and took the ball first. They scored on a 7-yard run by Anderson and then decided to go for 2-point conversion. In the biggest play of the game the Eagle defense stopped the run and set up the Eagles with a win if they could score and kick the extra point. From the 2-yard line the Eagles went razzle dazzle with the reverse to Wilkerson, who found quarterback Carr open and he outraced the defense into the end zone for the touchdown. Fugate was successful and the Eagles had won 24-23 in a very tough loss for Tyner. The Eagles now had only one game left in the season, a region matchup with East Hamilton. Both teams come in with one region loss but due to the Howard game not being played, the Eagles are one short on wins, which would affect the final seeding for postseason. A win by Rhea and a Walker Valley win over McMinn would give Eagles a # 2 seed. A win by Rhea and a McMinn win over Walker would push the Eagles down to # 4 seed. A loss by Rhea could result in a # 4 seed. This week that situation has been muddled more as Howard has petitioned for the cancelled game to be a forfeit in favor of Howard.
