Junior Varsity Wins 6-1
Athens Tennessee 3/25/24 -- Monday, March 25th, was a sunny, windy day for soccer while the Eagles traveled to Athens to defend their undefeated season so far. The Eagles started off the first half with good ball control and passing through the back of the field and then back up top. Unfortunately, there were a lot of controversial off-sides calls that kept the first half runs up top contained. Zane Shaffer, however, managed to break free off an Anderson Cathey through ball and put a goal in the back of the net to give the Eagles the lead at halftime of 1-0. The second half saw more of the Eagles’ runs allowing for some beautiful soccer play. Elijah Norman had a massive throw-in into the box on the Cougars’ end, which Zane Shaffer settled, tapped to Ian Arnold, who 1-touch blasted it in the near corner past the goalkeeper’s hands, letting the Eagles go up 2-0. Anderson Cathey had a free run up top, which the Cougar goalie managed to deflect, but Ian Arnold was there to collect the rebound and find the back of the net, 3-0 for the Eagles. The Eagles kept distributing the ball nicely to each other and Arnold got his second goal of the evening off a Sam Walton assist. Cathey followed a few minutes later with another break-away and was fouled from behind in the box, gaining a PK shot in the box and a yellow card. Cathey buried the PK for his second goal of the night as well, and a lead of 5-0. Adrian Juan also drew a foul inside the box, resulting in a second PK of the night, but the Cougars’ goalie had a great diving save and the rebound to put the shot back in by Gavin McCosh barely missed the net. Final score for Varsity 5-0. Ian Arnold had this to say, “We really played great in all positions, but our defense did a fantastic job! Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” The JV game followed right after with another action packed game and high running score for the Eagles again. Devi Lopez, Excar Vazquez-Diaz, and Seth Smith all contributed 1 goal and Brohdi Gilmore finished with a hat trick of 3 goals, sailing the Eagles to a victory of 6-1. Both Varsity and JV now stand with a record of 5-0. RMS travels to East Hamilton on Thursday, JV at 4:30pm and V at 5:30pm.
