Rev. Howard Harmon Scroggins

September 21, 1946 - July 6, 2024

He was born to the late Samuel and Delta Scroggins, on September 21, 1946, in Fentress County, Tennessee. Howard joined the army at a young age where he served in the 87th Engineering Battalion. After a 13-month tour in Vietnam, Howard returned home to Tennessee where he met and married his loving wife, Billie.  After they married, Howard and Billie settled in Grandview, Tennessee, where they began building their life together and raising their two daughters, Melinda and Trish. Howard worked at Southern Silk Mills in Spring City, Tennessee, for more than 40 years where he maintained, designed and built most of the machines that were the heart of the company's success. Howard was also a lifetime member of the McClendon/Garrison American Legion, Post # 203 in Spring City, Tennessee.

Howard was called to serve the Lord as a preacher and announced his calling in 1982. He loved to preach and to sing about his love for Jesus. Howard served as pastor of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Spring City, Tennessee for three and a half years and of Falling Springs Missionary Baptist Church in Alpine, Tennessee, for more than twenty-five years. At the time of his passing, he and Billie were members of Dogwood Missionary Baptist Church in Grandview, Tennessee.

Howard loved the Lord with all of his heart. Next to God, he loved his family. The love for his wife and children was only matched by the love he had for his three grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents, numerous siblings, and several nieces and nephews. Howard is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Billie Jean Scroggins; his daughters, Melinda (James) Morgan of Grandview, and Patricia (Jason) Hubbard of Crossville; grandsons Tony (Melissa) Tuttle, Jamie (Angel) Morgan, and Chris Moore, all of Crossville; his great-grandchildren, Ella Tuttle, Oliver, Braxton, and Oaklynne Morgan – who were the light of his life; his sister, Arlie Suarez of Crossville, Dorothy Matthews and Sue Winningham, both of Byrdstown; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga for the extraordinary care and compassion shown to Howard and his family during his final days.

Howard's life was a testament of his faith, service and dedication. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
