July 16, 2023 - Dayton, TN
Brandon Newell recently graduated from Lee University and he found postgraduate work as Staff Assistant for congressman Chuck Fleischmann.
Brandon is the son of Jeff and Mindy Newell. He was born in Chattanooga, TN, and has lived in Dayton all his life. He attended Dayton City School and moved up to Rhea County High School in 2015, and graduated from Rhea County High School in 2019. In May, Brandon graduated from Lee University with a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration and Business Administration.
Brandon was kind enough to answer a few interview questions about his journey from Dayton to Washington D.C.
What are some of your favorite experiences at Lee University?
"One of the most notable experiences I had at Lee was my global perspective trip to England last summer. Lee University requires all students to embark on an immersive journey outside of the States in order to not only experience the culture but also spread the Word of God."
"I chose Lee University because of their unapologetic attitude on faith integration. I wanted an education but didn't have to compromise my values."
"I had many goals at Lee and I can confidently say that some of my biggest achievements include graduating , creating a conservative presence on campus through College Republicans, and expand my resume through experiences like TISL (mock student legislature in Nashville), Pi Sigma Alpha (political science honor society), and internships."
What sparked your interest in politics?
"The 2016 Presidential election piqued my interest in politics as it was quite interesting compared to previous elections. It wasn’t until 2018 that I became active in politics, joining my first campaign and tracking the US Senate race in Tennessee. I don’t necessarily enjoy the divisive rhetoric in today’s politics. I believe creating enemies on the other side gets us nowhere."
I know you played tennis at Rhea County. How was that experience?
I love tennis and have recently got into pickleball. In high school I played on the varsity tennis team and my doubles partner and I actually went to the State semifinals both junior and senior year.
How has your faith guided you on your journey?
"Faith is absolutely the most important thing in my life. Having a support group in my family, friends, and school is crucial. God has opened so many doors and I continue to put my trust in Him and his timing."
Talk about your first trip to Washington D.C..
"My first trip to Washington was in 8th grade and I was in awe the entire time. My favorite venue to visit was the Washington Monument because you could see the entire city and I have yet to go back."
Talk a little about your path that ended up on the staff of Congressman Chuck Fleischmann.
"I worked for US Senator Bill Hagerty in the summer of 2021 and Congressman Chuck Fleischmann in the summer of 2022 so those were two politicians I enjoyed meeting. One very kind Senator that always smiled when we passed and welcomed interns into her office to meet her was Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa."
"I interned with Congressman Fleischmann last summer so that experience helped return to the Hill. One of the things that I always do is make sure the constituents’ needs are met and the team is served well. I believe that mindset helped show the team that I will be ready to work on day one."
Do you have a long-term career goal?
"One of my ultimate goals since getting into politics has been to run for public office. I love my community and being able to represent my family, friends, and neighbors would be such a humbling experience. However, since getting into politics, I understand God’s plan is not always identical to mine, so I have learned to let Him show me where he needs me to be."
