Johnson University Wins NCCAA National Championship in Basketball.

Knoxville, TN -- Former Rhea County High School basketball player Kaleb Laws signed with Johnson University back in 2019 and is a sophomore at Johnson. This year the Johnson University Royals men's basketball team won the 2021 National Christian College Athletic Association(NCCAA) DII National Championship on Saturday, March 13th, claiming the first ever national championship in athletic department history. Kaleb started for the Royals and scored 8 points in the 95-74 win over Arlington Baptist University .The championship was a great experience for Kaleb, but he took time to answer a few questions about his time at the University.
How was the transistion from high school to college?
The transition was quick because my coach put confidence in me and I had to play behind a great big and a team leader my freshman year so I had a good example to go by.
What was the difference between high school and college out on the basketball court?
The biggest difference in college and high school basketball is just skill like if you don’t work on your game it shows in practice and in games.
How was the effect of COVID-19 on your season?
We only had four games or so get canceled due to covid.
What were your thoughts when the game was just ending and you were a champion?
After I won was just “ wow all those long night in the gym working and working for my dream finally paid off”.
What are some of your favorite things about Johnson University?
Some of my favorite things about Johnson are my coaches and teammates and my professors because I get to learn and become a better student athlete with them every day
Talk about the difference in road trips in college vs high school?
Road trips in college are way different than high school road trips because the time and prep for a college game is so much more and the time of the bus is longer.
Compare the championship to other athletic accomplishments over your basketball career.
Yes winning this title is the most exciting thing I’ve been apart of athletically since making the regional tournament in 15 years my senior year.
Give the readers some insight to your coaching staff at Johnson.
My head coach, Brandon Perry is awesome and my other coaches are amazing. They do so much for us and help us with everything . They really get to know us and know when we need to talk and when we need a butt chewing because all they want is our best
