Hallie DeArman Finishes 5th in Discus at State Meet
May, 2021
Mufreesboro, Tn -- Hallie DeArman finished her track and field career at Rhea County High School strong with a fifth place finish in discus at the State Tournament Meet held at Rockvale High School, just outside Mufreesboro, Tennessee. DeArman finished with a throw of 112 ft 6 in, which matched her career and season high, thrown earlier in a home meet back in April. This was Hallie's second trip to the award stand, as she finished 6th in the shot put back in her sophomore year with a throw of 36 ft 5 in. Hallie qualified to compete at the state all three years she could, since last year the opportunity was taken away. State meet was not held, due to covid-19.
Hallie competed four times this year and also took time to compete at a high level with the district champion softball team, where she had a career high 8 home runs while playing well in the highly demanding catcher position. Hallie also excelled on the Rhea County High School volleyball team. Hallie was a three sport star and will be continuing her athletic and academic career at Tennessee Wesleyan, where she signed a scholarship offer to play softball. There former Rhea County High School softball coach Leah (Price) Thompson is on the coaching staff. Hallie was also a member of the Rhea County Academic Champions, so academics is also a priority with DeArman. She is the daughter of Kenneth and Kathy DeArman. At Tennessee Wesleyan University, she plans to major in Physical Therapy.
After her All-State performance at state meet, Hallie said, "I don't even know(how I did so well). I though I would do really bad, to be honest. Never got this high in dis. I usually throw better in shot."
Rhea County High School trrack coach Steffan Holder said, "Hal really stepped up. A reverse of her sophomore year. Today she threw her shot pretty well, but come up short of making the finals."
"Hallie is great under pressure. In the sectionals she threw three times that were fouls and on her last attempt, she threw one in for 4th place finish to get to the state. Today in her first flight round, she threw 2 out of bounds and we made an adjustment to finish 7th in first flight to make the finals, where she finished 5th."
"Hallie would have been one of the few athletes to come to state all four years if not for losing last year to the covid-19 cancellatiion."
