Dayton, TN -- Dayton City School fielded a Dayton City School Cross Country team for 2022 and team has performed well in the meets this year. In their last meet on September 14th in Cleveland, the boy's team finished 6th and team had some individuals do well too. So how much is involved in starting a team from scratch. We asked Dayton City coach Kristie Datz a few questions.
Who made the decision to begin a DCS XC team?
The decision to start a cross country team was made by our Principal of Operations and Athletic Director, Cameron Burton.
When did you get involved in the process?
There was an interest form that was sent out about who might be interested in coaching and I jumped at the opportunity.
What was your motivation for getting involved with cross country?
I feel like cross country offers another option for students who want to get involved in extracurricular activities. It gives student/athletes something to work toward and introduces them to the dynamics of being on a team.
What are the complexities to beginning a team from scratch?
Our biggest challenge was figuring out where to run to practice. Once we established a course to run, the team was able to get off to a great start.
Is there anyone else who has been essential in the starting of the team?
Our school board has been very supportive of our efforts and we appreciate them for everything they do. It has also been great seeing parents so willing to get involved and support their students on the team. Overall, it has been a great experience thus far and has been very positive for our school community.
