Clyde Day Thurman Sr. age 96 of Spring City, Tennessee died peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2025 at Rhea Medical Center. He was of the Protestant faith.
Clyde was born in Spring City on July 10, 1928. At the age of 17, Clyde joined the U.S. Navy during WWII. After his service he joined the Merchant Marines. He then moved to Elyria, Ohio where he began a trucking company.
In 1968, Clyde moved back to his hometown, Spring City, Tennessee. He opened Gastown Full Service Gas Station and later opened NAPA Auto Parts. When he was younger, Clyde enjoyed playing golf and hunting, but his lifetime passion was farming and raising cattle. Clyde was a member of the local American Legion and was one of the oldest surviving members of McClendon-Garrison American Legion Post #203.
Clyde was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years Ruth McCabe Thurman, his parents Grover Cleveland and Bertie Rice Thurman, his brothers G.C., W.H., James, and Leroy, his sisters Mattie Davis, Irene Pritchard, and Gladys Wilson, children Linda Brown, Ronnie Roberts, and Cathy Lauer, and one grandson Eddie Brown.
He is survived by his sister Betty Jo (Charles) Alley; daughters Sue Carter and JoAnn Thurman; his sons Danny (Gretchen) Thurman and Clyde (Wendy) Thurman Jr; his 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to say a special thank you to caregivers Karen and Pat and to Hearth Hospice for their care and compassion to Clyde and his family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Vaughn Funeral Home with Rev. Nate Williams officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Spring City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 8, 2025 from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Vaughn Funeral Home.
