Charles Lawrence Benton II, age 54, of Spring City, passed away early Friday morning, October 11, 2019 at his home in Spring City. He was born on January 23, 1965 in Dayton, the son of Charles Lawrence Benton, Sr. and Noralean (Cowley) Benton Huddleston.
Charles was raised in Rhea County and lived in Knoxville from 1983 to 2015, returning to Rhea County in 2015. He was a 1983 Rhea County High School graduate and a 1989 UT college graduate. Charles was a defensive back and punt returner for the TN Vols. He found his calling and dream job as Career Exploration teacher at Rhea County High School and is remembered by students for his caring, his hugs, athleticism, and friendly nature. Charles coached football, baseball and basketball previously. He was a “Vol for Life”, TN letterman from 1983-1986 and “Voice of the Eagles” for basketball. Charles loved Rhea County Eagles sports and was passionate about the TN Vols. He above all, loved his wife, daughter and family and had a strong faith in God. Charles was a member of the Grace Baptist Church.
Charles is survived by his wife of 26 years and high school sweetheart of 38 years, Kim (Kelley) Benton, of Spring City; his daughter who was his whole heart, Jayden Benton of Spring City; his two brothers, Stewart (Renee) Pugh of Cleveland and Carlos (Candace) Benton of Chattanooga; his sisters, Katrina Benton of Spring City and Angela Abrams of Georgia; his grandmother, Kathylean McDonald “Katie Momma” of Spring City; many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Charles will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. James Guthrie and Rev. Rusty Revis officiating. He will be laid to rest in Petersburg Cemetery in Spring City.
The family is being cared for by the Vanderwall Funeral Home where they will receive friends Monday after 5:00 p.m.
