Rhea County Girls Soccer Team Wins 5-4 On 4-3 PK Kicks Over Walker Valley. Host Siegel in Substate on Saturday
Cleveland, TN - 10/22/25 -- Rhea County High School Girls Soccer Team Won a battle with Walker Valley on Wednesday night in a game that was not settled in regular time and not settled after two 10 minute overtime periods and was not settled until the last kick of Penalty Kick phase of the shootout. This game was almost a replay of the district championship game almost a week earlier, but without the kick that found the edge of the net to give Walker Valley the win. Rhea County won on the field and on the scoreboard. With the win, the Lady Eagles will host Siegel at home on Saturday 10/25/25 with 3 pm start time. Siegel lost 1-0 to Stewarts Creek on Thursday evening. A win today would put the Lady Eagles into the State Tournament for a first ever event. Lady Eagles move their season reccord to 12-3-3 for the season.
Rhea had a couple of shots on goal early(first 4 minutes) with Walker turning away the shots. Walker had a shot from the 25 that sailed wide around the 34:45 mark. Lady Eagles had several opportunities in the fist half and keep the pressure on the Walker Valley defense, but did not dent the goal. Lady Eagles had a scare around the 28 minute mark when Kloe Reeves went down with injury on a collision. She was able to return to the game. Goalkeep Keep Jetta Sharp made nice save around the 25-minute mark as Walker Valley spent more time on the Rhea County end of the field in the second 10 minutes of the half. Lady Eagles did a good job of getting the ball down to the Walker Valley end of the field, but just could get too many good shots at the goal.
At halftime coach Kanipes complemented the team on implementing the things they worked on it practice into the game. Lady Eagles got the first goal of the game with nice pass from midfield lead Kloe Reeves who score the goal for the 1-0 lead for Rhea. Walker scored their goal at the 14:35 mark on a corner kick that landed in a mass of bodies and Walker snuck this one by defenders for the goal. That concluded the scoring for the regulation game at 1-1.
Teams then played two 10-minute overtime periods with no goals scored, which brought on the Penalty Shootout phase of the game. Each team alternately took turns with penalty kicks. Penalty kicks are brutal for the goal keep as players get a running start on a free kick from the goal line. Both teams made the first 3 kicks. Walker missed high on their 4th try after Lady Eagles had made theirs, but they then missed their chance to keep the lead and Walker was successful for 4-4 tie. Lady Eagles' Lidia Butt was successful on the goal to go up 5-4 and Walker Valley's attempt was wide, resulting in the win for the Lady Eagles. Taking penalty kicks for Rhea were: Freshman Annalee Willis, Lyla Roddy, Lidia Butt, Madison Smith, and Junior Avery Dyer. These ladies performed under pressure and four of these were freshman. Kudos to Walker Valley, 15-3-2, who played with heart and guts out there. Good luck as they travel to play 18-2-0 Stewarts Creek on Saturday with a 7 pm start time.
