Hoyal Thurman Obituary

September 3, 1943 - August 26, 2025

Hoyal Don Thurman, age 81, of Sale Creek, Tennessee, passed away on August 27, 2025, at the Hospice Care Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was born on September 3, 1943, in Dayton, Tennessee, to William Allen and Erma Thomas Thurman.

A lifelong resident of Dayton and a man of the Baptist faith, Hoyal was a proud 1961 graduate of Rhea Central High School, where he was honored as “Most Athletic.” Throughout his life, he was known for his strong work ethic, competitive spirit, and love of the outdoors. A two-time Golden Gloves boxing champion in his younger years, he channeled that same determination into everything he did. Hoyal was an avid gardener, an outdoorsman who loved fishing and nature, and a devoted sports fan. He was a fan of the Atlanta Braves and a passionate supporter of the Rhea County Golden Eagles, holding season tickets since 1984.

Hoyal was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Sammie Keylon Thurman; his daughter, Tracy Gross; brothers, Odell Thurman and Tommy Thurman; and sisters, Virginia Ferguson, Anna Ruth Aslinger, and Jane Stultz.

He is survived by his son, Rodney Thurman; siblings, John (Joyce) Thurman, Aileen Wilkey, and June (Jim) Poole; grandchildren, Austin Thurman, Chance Thurman, Ethan Thurman, Colton Thurman, and Morgan Holden; a great-grandchild, Willow Jane Holden; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 1, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the chapel, with Pastor Justin Dannel officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
