Quay Leonard McKenzie Jr. Obituary

September 8, 1942 ~ February 19

Quay Leonard McKenzie, Jr. of Dayton passed away at his home on February 19, 2025.  He was 82 years old.  He was born on September 8, 1942 to the late Quay Leonard and Naomi “Pat” McKenzie Sr.  He was of the Baptist faith and was an Air Force veteran.  He retired from Combustion Engineering, where he was a welder and then a crane operator.  He was also a great mechanic and carpenter.  He hand built beautiful items including a bookcase that he custom made for his daughter to hold the majority of her book collection.  He loved mowing the yard, fishing, and watching old westerns.  The Big Bang Theory, Nascar and any kind of racing that his oldest grandson, Kyle, was doing.  More than all of those things, he loved his family and his faithful companion- his dog, Spike, the most.  He loved to tease his great grandchildren who called him Junie, rather than PaPaw.  He ended every conversation with “Love you more.”  He will be missed more than words can convey by family and friends alike.

Quay is survived by his children; Lynne (Max) Shadden and son; Tracy McKenzie, grandchildren; Kyle (Sasha) Shadden and Jesse Shadden, great-grandchildren; Kiley Shadden, Erica Shadden and Kara Eustice and the mother of his children; Pat McKenzie, all of Dayton, TN.  He is also survived by his sister; Rella Suttles of Dayton and brother; Harold (Vickie) McKenzie of Georgia, nieces and and nephews along with their families, special lifelong friend; Harold Eakins of Dayton and special “little buddy” Hunter Kennedy.

Special thanks to Sasha Shadden and Pat McKenzie for taking such excellent care of him.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 7PM in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5-7PM.
