Susan Gibson Coe Obituary

October 3, 1961 - February 7, 2025

Susan Gibson Coe passed away February 7, 2025.

She was born in New Orleans on October 3, 1961 to Donald and Mary Margaret Gibson.

Susan is survived by her siblings David (Dee), Mary Hollingsworth (Jeff), and Betsy Barkley (Dana), as well as 8 nieces and nephews and extended family.

As the youngest, and only blue-eyed child, Susan exerted her strong will at an early age, much to the chagrin of her brother and sisters. After moving to Houston at a young age, she attended schools in the Bellaire and Meyerland neighborhoods. She was a member of the last graduating class of Marian High School. At the age of 16 she moved to Austin and attended St Edwards University. Later, she was accepted to the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas, but that path was delayed indefinitely, as she chose to pursue working full-time.

Susan loved Austin and made a life for herself there. She worked in the insurance and construction industries, most notably with William Gammon  Insurance Agency and Robert Coe Builders. In 1995, she married Robert Coe. They shared 27 years together prior to her illness and subsequent health decline.

Susan was a beautiful, free-spirited, generous and loving person. She gave of her time and energy to volunteer activities, including Meals on Wheels. She was an animal lover, and the rescuer of several dogs, who became her “children”. She spent many happy times at their lake house, the fulfillment of a long-time dream.

The family would like to thank all of the dedicated staff of Sodalis South Austin and Suncrest Hospice communities for helping to provide Susan with comfort and care in her final years. A special thank you goes out to Susan’s friend and personal care-giver, Jane Gordon, who provided outstanding support and loving care to Susan each day, and also to her loyal friends Cash and Roger Edwards, who kindly made sure that even after her disability Susan enjoyed the occasional outing to her favorite restaurant or nail salon.

Susan will be laid to rest with her parents and extended family in TN. If you are so inclined, donations in her memory may be made to an animal rescue or food pantry in your area.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”
