Rhea County High School, Rhea of Sunshine, and Quality of Life participated in the "Special Athletic Games' that have been held at Rhea County High School for 38 years. A new record for participants this year was set at 286. 572 medals were distributed to many smiling faces during the event. Events included 50 yard dash, softball throw, soccer kick, and several other athletic competitions. Always a fun event that brings out lots of smiles and gives the community an opportunity to come together to celebrate these athletes. From preschool to senior citizens, there is a diversity of personalities and backgrounds.

Volunteer organizations/ teams that helped with the games were Leadership from Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Rhea County High School Softball team, Rhea County High School Cheerleaders, Select Best Buddies and RCHS students. The National Anthem was sung by Brett Pugh, an athlete participating for Rhea of Sunshine and I have not seen any better. Just a great night for Rhea County.

Amy Baird, the event director for the past 7 years, received a plaque from Vets And Kids organization for providing games and fun for the Special Education Kids, said, "The Special Athletic Games is such a special event in the sense that it highlights a population that doesn't often get the spotlight. These individuals are talented and unique in all kinds of different ways, and it’s great to have a day where they can display those talents."

"In the past 2 years, we have increased attendance and involvement significantly, with the addition of the RCHS cheerleaders and the Best Buddies. The Best Buddies organization is an international group, that RCHS has recently gotten involved with. In the past 2 years, it’s been incredible to see the culture at our school grow in such a positive way. There is a sense of acceptance and inclusion between regular ed and special ed students. Andrea Kirkman and Amanda Roberts have done a great job leading this group."
