Samuel Swafford, age 89, of Dayton, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2025, at CHI Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga. Born on December 26, 1935, in Pikeville, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Bernice and Evelyn Swafford.
He was of the Baptist faith and a lifelong resident of the area, Samuel was known for his love and dedication to family and community. He spent many faithful years serving as a custodian at Dayton City School, where his presence left a lasting mark. His work was more than just a job—it was a contribution to the lives of countless students and staff who knew him as a steady and friendly figure in the halls.
Outside of work, Samuel found joy in the simple pleasures of life, especially fishing, a favorite pastime that brought him peace and happiness throughout the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles Swafford.
Samuel is survived by his children: Barbara Ann Swafford, Sammy (Kristina) Swafford, Rachael Swafford, Odetta Thompson, and Wendy. He also leaves behind his siblings: Rachael (Luther) Shockley, Christine Washington, Mary Jo Williams, and James Robert Swafford. He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren and a great-grandfather to eighteen great-grandchildren, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the First Christian Community Church, with Pastor Charles Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until the time of the service at the church. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Cemetery in Dayton, Tennessee.
