Rhea County Wins 34-10 over Tuscola

Eagles Run Record to 2-0

Evensville, TN -- Rhea County High School Football took time to honor long-time Rhea County sports writer Terry Goins before the game as he was honorary captain for the game. The Eagles were hosting Tuscola, a team from North Carolina, so fans were unsure what to expect from the visitors.

Jackson Langley put the Eagles on the scoreboard with 4:48 left in first quarter with 33 yard touchdown run. Ochoa added the extra point for 7-0 Eagle lead.

Mountaineers began series at their own 27 yard line and marched down the field after receiving the kickoff and Eagles ended the march at the 16, where Mountaineers were successful on the 16 yard field goal by Davis King with 1:23 left in the first quarter.

After the Eagles were forced to punt, Mountaineers got good field positon at the Eagle 40 but defense and penalty put the Mountaineers in throwing down and Gavin Roddy went up and came down with the interception on the Eagles 15.

After another exchange of possessions, it was Pankey with an interception, this one off an Alloway deflection that gave Eagles possession at their won 25 yard line.

Eagles wasted no time taking advantage of the interception as Kyle Carr found Hampton running neck and neck with Mountainer defender and the 59 yard pass put the Eagles at the Mountaineer 16 yard line, but drive dried up at Mountaineer 23 yard line and Ochoa's field goal try was short.

Mountaineers did not keep ball long as quarterback Coleman Bryson overthrew intended receiver and Roddy has his second interception of the night and third overall by the Eagles. He took the pick back to inside the 10 yard line to setup the Eagles for touchdown. Langley earned the last three yards of the drive for the second touchdown for Langley and second for the Eagles with 27 seconds left in second half. Ochoa kick was no good. Score ended 13-3 at half.

Second half kick by Eagles went out of bounds to setup the Mountaineers at the 35 yard line. Eagles defense held and Eagles setup shop at their own 33 yard line after penalty on punt return. Langley went from the 35 to 37 for 28 yard gain but penalty took ball back to Eagle 37. Hampton got a first down with run from Eagle 37 to Mountainer 45. Eagles bogged down and had to punt, putting Mountaineers at their own 20 yard line. After a couple of first downs, it was Coleman Cothern who broke through for the long 62 yard touchdown run. The extra point put Monaineers within 13-10 with 6:44 left in the third period.

Eagles received the ball and began play on their own 20 yard line. Tuscola defense was stout so Kyle Carr went to the air from the Eagle 35 and found Cowley at the Mountainer 27 yard line for a big 38 yard gain. Hampton had a couple of nice runs for first down, Langley picked up nine yards before penalty put the ball on the three to setup touchdown run for Langley. Ochoa added first down for 20-20 lead.

Eagles covered the kick well, keeping the Mountaineers inside their 15 after the kick runback. Mountaineers made one first down up to 25. Sir Alloway had a big tackle for loss but Bryson found Tice for big gain up to 45 yard line just before the end of the third quarter. Fisher had a big tackle for loss with assist from Shelfer to give Eagles ball on turnover on downs at the Mountaineer 45 yard line.

After a couple of short runs by Eagles, Jackson Langley took the ball around right side with a couple of nice blocks to go 37 yards to the 4 yard line. Langley finished the drive with shsort touchdown run and the extra point made the score 27-10 with 10:27 left in game.

Langley ahd a couple of good runs and it was Ryan Young finishing up the drive with the 12 yard touchdown run. After stopping the Mountaineers, the Eagles got the ball back and Langley and Young had some nice runs and as time ran out the Eagles were sitting on the Tuscola 10 yard line.

On the night Kyle Carr completed 4 of 7 passes for 118 yards. Reveiving leaders were Hampton 59, Cowley 38, and Young 16. Jackson Langley had 170 yards rushing on 24 rushes and four touchdowns. Dalton Hampton had 67 yards rushing on 17 attemps and Ryan Young had 41 yards on 6 attempts to lead the way.

For the game, Rhea County had 399 yards of offense(281 on ground). Tuscola had 253 yards of total offense(162 on ground). Eagles had 17 first downs vs 10 for Mountaineers. Eagles won turnover battle 3-0.

Now the Eagles travel to Walker Valley, a team without a lot of sucess over the last two seasons, but a team that throws the ball all over the field, but they have not been putting up great passing numbers this year(102,108) against Karns, a win 42-40 and Bradley Central a loss 59-14 In those games, they gave given up 22 and 17 first downs.
