Rhea County Basketball Ends 2023 Season in District

Eagles and Lady Eagles Fall to Walker Valley in District Tournament in Cleveland

Cleveland, TN -- Rhea County High School basketball opened their district tournament play with back to back games vs Walker Valley in games played at Cleveland High School, host site for District 4A District 5. Both Walker Valley teams won the matchups with Lady Mustangs advancing with 52-43 win and Mustangs advancing with 59-43 win. The Lady Mustangs moved on with 14-14 record to play the 29-1 Bradley Beatettes.

Lady Mustangs 52 Lady Eagles 43

Lady Eagles put together a 9-0 run in the first quarter for 10-5 lead. Lady Mustangs fought back to cut the lead to 12-10 at end of first quarter. Turnovers plauged the Lady Mustangs and Lady Eagles took advantage for a 23-19 lead at the halftime break.

Walker Valley switched out defense to zone in third quarter and and Lady Eagles did not respond well with Walker Valley winning the quarter 13-6, beginning with an 8-0 run at first of qurter on their way to 32-29 lead. The fourth quarter was big for Lady Mustangs as they ran out to 41-29 lead early and survived a comeback by Lady Eagless that cut lead to 41-35 with just over two minutes to go. Senior Ava Travis led Lady Eagles with 18 points and Hayla Patton also made double figures with 14 points.

Mustangs 59 Eagles 43

Caleb Sausville bombed from long range for Mustangs with 7 makes to power the Mustangs to the 59-43 win with game high 21 points. With the win, the Mustangs advanced to play the 20-7 McMinn County Cherokees on Saturday.

Neither team took control in first quarter until late when a late 3 by Walker put the lead to 17-13 at quarter's end. Mustangs moved the lead to 24-13 in the second quarter and Eagles went scoreless for the first 4:30 of the quarter. Eagles closed the gap, but Sausville hit back-to-back 3-pointer to give Walker the 43-33 lead at end of third.

In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs pushed the lead to 20(56-36) and held on for the 59-43 win. Bryce Dupre the most consistent scorer for Eagles this year finished with 14 to lead the Eagles and no other Eagle made double figures. Rhea County made three 3-point goals and Walker made 9.
