Rhea Basketball Has Successful Week

Eagles Pick Up Wins Over Howard Tech and Ooltewah; Lose to Cleveland

Cleveland, TN -- Rhea County High School boys' basketball went 2-1 for the week ending 1/20/23 in three games. The began the week with a win over Howard Tech on Tuesday, 1/17/23, and picked up a win at Ooltewah on Thursday, 1/19/23 before ending the week with a loss at # 4 ranked (17-5)Cleveland High School in Cleveland. Overall this was a successful week, but fell short of a fantastic 3-0 week they would have liked to have attained. The 16-11 Eagles will host the 12-8 Walker Valley Mustangs on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. Walker will be coming off a four-game losing streak, with losses to Cleveland, Bradley, McMinn and Red Bank. The Eagles lost their previous game with Walker Valley 61-47, back on December 9, 2022. Personnel has changed since that game as Kaleb Martin is no longer on the team and Kyler Akin will be in the starting lineup off injury. Martin led the Eagles with 15 points and 9 rebounds with Hank Logsdon and Bryce Dupre each scoring 11. Game time will be 7:30 pm.

Rhea 70 Howard Tech 61

Rhea County moved a 20-15 lead to 38-22 at halftime in this home game for the Eagles. The Owls played better in the second half, but despite winning the second half 39-32, they fell short 70-61. Kyler Akin was the leading scorer for Eagles with 26 points, with 3 long range bombs and a very good 11-15 from the line. Bryce Dupre added 19 points for the Eagles, shooting 3 of 4 from behind the arc. Dupre and Akin led the Eagles with 6 rebounds each. Also Scoring for Eagles were Hank Logsdon 8, Caleb Carr 8, Keshawn Smith 5, and Zach Howard 4.

In Ooltewah, the Eagles broke open a close game and came away with a convincing win 66-37. Game was tied at the end of one quarter 14-14. They took the lead in the second-quarter 32-21. The Eagles exploded in the third-quarter to push the lead to 55-33 and finished strong for the 66-37 win. Four Eagles hit double figures in the game. Juniors Hand Logsdon and Bryce Dupre each tallied 14 points to lead the Eagles. Kyler Akin and Michael Truax scored 11 and 10 points to hit double figures. Also scoring were Sam Stumbo 6, Caleb Carr 6, and Keshawn Smith 5. Bryce Dupre had 6 rebounds and Kyler Akin 3 assists to lead Rhea County.

Cleveland 72 Rhea 54

In Cleveland, the Eagles played the # 4 Cleveland Blue Raiders. Senior Camden Gober hit 3 long-range bombs, and Alex Hyder hit one at the buzzer to push the Raider's lead to 21-12. The Eagles hung around in the second quarter, but Cleveland extended the lead to 11 points at 36-25 when halftime arrived. Kyler Akin led the Eagles with 8 third-quarter points as they cut the lead to 50-40 after 3 quarters. Cleveland used 4 three-point baskets to power them to the 22-14 quarter edge and give the Raiders a 72-54 win. Bryce Dupre and Kyler Akin each made double figures to lead the Eagles with 14 and 13 points respectively. Also scoring for Rhea were, Zach Howard 8, Hank Logsdon 7, Caleb Carr 6, Sean Norman 3 and Michael Truax 3.

Senior Judah Sault led Cleveland with 22 points and Camden Gober had 18 points on 6 3-point baskets. Alex Hyder also made double figures with 16 points on the night.
