November 2020

Evensville, TN --  During their 95th Anniversary Dinner on November 6, 2020, the John Sevier Chapter of the Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution awarded Cadet Captain Jacob Reed, a Senior at Rhea County High School the 2020 Outstanding Cadet of the Year Award and Medal for winning at both the local and state level. The presentations were made at the Medal of Honor Heritage Center in Chattanooga.

Cadet Captain Reed formerly of the Rhea County’s Golden Eagle JROTC Battalion was officially recognized as the 2020 Tennessee Outstanding Cadet of the Year. During his Junior year, being both ranked in the top of his JROTC unit and academic classes, Reed was given the opportunity to participate in the SAR’s JROTC Enhanced Essay competition. After being selected by the Col. Benjamin Cleveland Chapter as their Chapter Level Outstanding Cadet of the Year and essay competition winner in December 2019, Reed then moved to the state level to compete against other similarly ranked Cadets across Tennessee. Winning at the state level, in late April 2020, Reed moved on to NSSAR where he placed in the top ten nationwide in May 2020.

Due to Covid-19, the presentation of the awards were postponed until the November meeting. At which, Tennessee SAR District Three Director, Larry Underwood presented Reed with the Chapter Level Outstanding Cadet of the Year Medal and Certificate. Followed by Tennessee SAR Vice President, Fred Underdown presenting Reed the State Level Outstanding Cadet of the Year Medal and Certificate.

Special Note from TNSSAR, JROTC Juniors within the top of their JROTC units and academic classes still have time to participate in the 2021 Enhanced Essay competition. However, they will need to work quickly with their local SAR Chapters as cadet packets need to be submitted to their sponsoring chapters by February 15, 2021. Cadets and military instructors in participating in this essay contest can find contact information at the John Sevier Chapter’s website at: https://johnsevierchapter.org/ho
