August 15, 1940 ~ August 26, 2024
The family of Louis E Boyer of Dayton is saddened to announce his passing on August 26, 2024, at the age of 84 years. Born on August 15, 1940 in Renovo, PA : Lou was a true definition of “Rags to Riches”. His great-granddaughter, Baylee, once asked what the pros and cons were of becoming so successful, to which he replied “There were Never any Cons” as he laughed.
Lou started working in a steel factory at the age of 18. After working in the steel factory for a couple of years the workers went on strike for 10 weeks, and after hearing the strike only got him a nickel more he went home and exclaimed to his mother he was going to college! After completing his chemistry degree, he became a teacher for a year, which was a successful year because his class passed the state chemistry exam, which he was the proudest of for that year. During Spring Break, he took a trip to see his brother, Mike, who had been drafted, and Aunt and Uncle in Delaware. While on the trip his uncle had him apply for a job at DuPont. He went to that interview in a borrowed suit with the cuff’s way too long and a tie as wide as his chest. He later received his offer letter and started work. After marrying and having his first daughter, Jane, he very quickly decided he no longer could do shift work after Jane crawled over and bit his toe while he slept.
Lou then went to work in Maryland at Chevron for 10 years and became a manager. He was offered a higher position as General Manager in little ol’ Dayton, TN, which is how he ended up here. A year later, Chevron sold out. Lou decided he was going to buy the company. The day before closing on his company, Lou didn’t have the money. But miraculously overnight, an investor decided to take a chance on him and loaned him the money the day of closing. And that is how he became the owner of what was known as Polyloom, now TenCate.
While owning Polyloom had the lowest turnover rate of less than 3% in all of Dayton. When asked how by his daughter, Jane, how he did this he said, “Your biggest asset is not all of the machinery, but your EMPLOYEES, without them you are nothing.”
Lou is proceeded in death by his parents, Bill and Jane Boyer; brother, Mike Boyer; sister, Sally Boyer; and grandson Drew Shaver. “He and Drew are probably already drinking beer and chasing women together”.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sister, Anne Hill; his daughters Jane (Ronnie) Shaver, Lisa Kite, and Katie (Daryl) Erickson; his grandchildren, Wendy (James) May, Taylor Kite, Maegan and John Carter Lanningham, and Makayla Goins; and great-grandchildren Baylee and Colby Hooper and Lynnix Shaver. There will be no service, but a burial in West Port, PA at Noyes Cemetery.
