June 25, 1936 - August 22, 2024
Ida Mae Calloway Guthrie, loving mother and wife, was born on June 25, 1936, to Roy and Lela Calloway in Rockwood, TN. She gained her eternal freedom on August 22, 2024, surrounded by her family.
Ida met her husband, Rev. James Guthrie, Sr., at Morristown College. The story is told that he liked to dance, and she couldn’t, so she stepped on his toes and messed up his shiny shoes! Also, her dorm mother would not let her get in the kissing line at Morristown College, so he never got any kisses. And they were married on April 13, 1960.
Ida was the first lady of Cowan Chapel United Methodist Church in Kingston, TN for over 40 years. She was a member of Reed Chapel United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted.
“Mother Ida”, as she was affectionately called by church members and friends, was a loving and caring woman, always giving her time to others. Even during her time at Life Care, she would often be found sharing and offering encouragement whenever she could. Her gift was serving others.
She loved music, especially hymns, and she enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was known for her sweet potato pies and greens, both were made and served with love!
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Hazel Calloway.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband of 64 years, Rev. James L. Guthrie, Sr.; her children: Miranda Eady (Chris), James Guthrie, Jr. (Carol), and Roy Guthrie; her grandchildren: Timothy Talley, Jr. (Crystal), Jonathan C. Guthrie, Lanise Swindle (Camden), Sierra Williams (Eric), and Shavonna Eady; ten great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Joseph and Edna Collins of Huntsville, AL; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
We will celebrate her life in Spring City on Wednesday, starting with receiving friends at 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.; the service will begin at 11:00 A.M. The location will be Spring City Methodist Church, 245 Church Street, Spring City, Tennessee 37381.Interment will follow at Petersburg Cemetery in Spring City.
