Rhea County Amasses 449 Yards Rushing; Led by Davis & Potts
8/25/23 -- Evensville, TN
Rhea County Ran for 449 yards against Red Bank in the win and they needed every one as a last drive by Eagles ran out the clock as Davis had a series of short runs to earn valuable first downs, after he and Potts entertained the fans with several exciting long runs during the game. This game comes on the heels of the heartbreaking loss by Eagles at Red Bank 7-3 last year on long kickoff return after Eagles had taken the lead on field goal in a defensive struggle by both teams.
Rhea began in bad fashion as they fumbled the opening kickoff and Red Bank had the ball at the 33 yard-line as Chauncey Odum recovered for Lions. Eagle's defense held Red Bank to a missed field goal and then the run game went to work. Eagles began on their own 20 and marched 84 yards downfield with Ethan Davis had the 38-yard highlight for the drive. Caleb Carr behind the offensive line gave Rhea the 6-0 lead after there were problems on special teams and Fugate never had chance to make the kick.
Red Bank scored quickly with Hill hitting Howard for 55-yard touchdown pass and after Stephenson kick, Red Bank had the lead. Eagles made another long drive on next possession, with Hunter Crowe's 33 yard run the highlight of the drive, but Eagles were turned away on 4th down attempt and Red Bank took the ball at their own 27 and moved down the field and score the go-a-head touchdown, highlighted by a 51 yard slant pass play from Hill to McGinnis, that took the ball down to the 3 yard-line. Feathersone had the short 2-yard run for the touchdown and Stephenson kick gave Lions 14-6 lead with6;45 left before halftime.
Eagles began next series on their own 20 after kick sailed into end-zone. Potts had a nice 20 yard plus run and penalty setup the Eagles inside the 10. Quarterback Caleb Carr scored the 2nd Eagle touchdown and Ethan Davis tacked on 2-point run for 14-14 tie with 3;18 left in the half.
Red Bank received the kick to start the half. Eagles came close to recovering kickoff, but ball was ruled out-of-bounds at the Red Bank 25. Rhea forced a 3-and-out and began first possession on their 17 yard-line. Cam Potts had nice run to take the ball into Lion territory at the 34. Eagles pushed the ball on into the endzone with Potts going around right-side for the go-a-head touchdown and kick for 21-14 lead with 2;56 left in 3rd quarter.
On their next possession, Lions moved the ball deep into Eagle territory before Ethan Davis came up with drive-stopping interception at the 1 yard-line. Davis had nice run to get the Eagles out from the shadow of the goal and then had another long run to put the ball at Eagle 46. Cam Potts took it to the house from there with nice break to the outside and change of direction on his way to 54-yard touchdown run and a 28-14 lead, after the Fugate kick, with 9:37 left in 3rd quarter.
On their next drive, backup quarterback Brune found Collier for long pass down to the Eagle 13. Brune came in for Hill, who was injured and left the game just before halftime). With 7:31 left in 3rd, Bradynn Baldwin brought the Lions with 7 with his 2-yard run and Stephenson kick.
Eagles took kickoff and moved up field they were forced to punt. Lions began their series at their 37. They moved across midfield before bogging down and turned over the ball on downs around midfield. Ethan Davis was the primary back as the Eagles ground out a couple of first-downs to put the game away, with the final 28-21 win.
Coach Mark Pemberton after the game said, "The team played well and in the second half we really do good job of shutting down their offense."
"Next week, we play Knox Central, who have historically been a good team with a couple of State Championships to their credit."
