8/23/21

Dayton, TN -- Dayton City opened their season in fine fashion with 42-8 win over visiting Oakdale as defense and offense clicked in the win. Probably the only snap in opening day was inopportune penalties and turnovers that cost the Sweatbees several scores. Thankfully those were not needed on this night.

Sweatbees kicked to Oakdale and immediately the defnse put the lockdown on the Oakdale offense, forcing a punt situation for Oakdale. A bad punt attempt put the ball on the ground and Connor Mitchell pounced on the ball to setup DCS in excellend field position at the 37 of Oakdale. From the 35, Rylin Suttles took the handoff from quarterback Bryce Garrison and made the corner and jetted down the home sidelines for the opening touchdown for the Sweatbees. Suttles added the two point conversion on the run and DCS had early 8-0 with 4:45 left in first quarter.

Sweatbees stopped the Eagles and were on a good drive before an interception gave the Eagles the ball back. First quareter ended 8-0 for Sweatbees. Sweeatbees defense kept the Oakdale team hemmed up and a bad exchange put the ball on the ground and Cam Hixson came up with the ball for a second Sweatbee touchdown. Two point conversion attempt was short and DCS held a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Jacob Martinez had interception on next series but it was wiped because of a roughing the passer penalty. But the turnover came on the next play with Landon Hailman coming up with fumble to setup Sweatbees at the Eagles 24 yard line. Rylin Suttles turned that turnover into six point with the run down the home sidelines for the Sweatbees third touchdown of the half. Suttles added the two point conversion to push the DCS leadd to 22-0 with 5:29 left in the half.

On the next series, Parker Kauffman had an apparent 75 yard pick-6 go away because of a defensive roughing the passer penalty. Oakdale could not move the ball and gave the ball up on downs in Sweatbee territory. Suttles had a nice 60 plus yard touchdown run called back on illegal block penalty. Sweatbees then gave ball back to Eagles on an interception deep in Oakdale territory. With time running out in the half the Eagles got greedy and went deep, but not deep enough as Parker Kaufman snapped the ball for the interception and returned ball to end zone for another touchdown. The two point conversion put the Sweatbees up 30-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Bryce Garrison found Noah Edwards for a 35 yard touchdown pass to give DCS the 36-0 lead early in the third quarter, after two point conversion failed. Edwards made it back to back touchdowns as he intercepted the pass at mid-field and danced untouched into the end zone to give Dayton the 42-0 lead late in the third quarter. Two point conversion failed. Eagles finally found the end zone late with a touchdown pass and two point conversion to give the final 42-8 margin.

After the game coach Jeff Hill told his team, "We executed very well tonight on offense and defense. Defense gave us a lot of offense this game. We worked really hard to get to this point."

In an interview with Tennessee Community Magazine, Jeff said, "The kids have been working hard and battling the heat. They had all this built up and tonight they were able to execute very well. We had a few penalties, but we came back and didn't let them stop our momentum."
