Dayton, TN -- You may have noticed work going on at the old tennis courts on Church Street behind Glaze supply. The city of Dayton is about to have its own turf Futsal courts. What is Futsal? Think of it like “mini-soccer”.

Futsal is played with five players on the field, one of whom is a goalie. The fields are much smaller and the game is played at a much faster pace with more scoring. All substitutions are “on the fly” meaning there are no interruptions in the game while players are being swapped out.

The Dayton facility will have two fields that are each 60 feet by 120 feet. The work is being done by the Dayton City Road crew under the direction of Kevin Swafford. The city has saved a significant amount of money on these projects by doing them “in-house”. So far work has been done to improve the badly cracked blacktop surface, concrete has been poured to square up the playing area, a drainage mat system has been installed and turf has been laid down with the support of Justin McCosh and his crew. Sand has been added to help the turf stand up and make it playable.

“We are really excited about this new facility. Soccer is growing rapidly in our area and this new facility shows a great commitment to support this growth by the city.” Said Dr. Chris Horton, President of RC3 soccer. “Tom Soloman the Dayton City town manager has been hugely instrumental in making this idea a reality. We expect to be able to establish leagues for both kids and adults as well as hold 5v5 tournaments almost immediately. This facility will help pay for itself by bringing in teams that will play and then spend money at our stores and restaurants.”

Only steps remaining are to add some infill material (that is the small pellets of rubber you see on turf fields) and finally painting lines. The city will be adding upgraded lighting similar to the lighting on the Pickleball courts.
