Shirley Doris Reed-Haydon Obituary

September 29, 1939 - August 6, 2024

Shirley Doris Reed Haydon age 84 of Spring City, Tennessee passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at Golden Years Retirement Resort.

She was born in the Shady Grove Community of Rhea County, Tennessee on September 29, 1939 to the late Ruth Vitatoe Reed and Henley Reed. The family moved to the west Wolf Creek community where she started her early education at the Wolf Creek Elementary School. The family moved to Spring City in 1947 where she attended the Spring City Elementary and graduated from Spring City High in 1957. While in high school she was a very active student and received many honors including Class Officer, cheerleader and Senior Class Beauty. She continued her education graduating from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in Cookeville in 1961 with a Bachelor’s Degree in education. She did Post Graduation Studies in High School Counseling at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. While at Tech, she was also very active and received many honors including Senior Class Beauty and Homecoming Queen Attendant. Shirley was also Miss Spring City in 1956 and first runner-up in the Miss Dayton Pageant in 1962. 

She began her teaching career at Rhea Central High School in Dayton on August 1961 and remained there until May 1964. Shirley married Paul Petrey Haydon of Oak Ridge on December 29, 1963 at the First Baptist Church in Spring City. She moved to Oak Ridge and began a teaching career at Oliver Springs High School. She retired as a Guidance Counselor in January 1999 after a 37 and a half year teaching career.

Shirley was of the Baptist Faith. Her husband Paul passed away in 1994. She was also predeceased by her parents Henley Reed in 1989 and Ruth Reed in 1987, by brother Donald Lynn Reed in 1969 and sister Virginia Joyce Reed Weaver, and a niece Lori Reed and a great-great nephew Drayton Reed Hartman, and a brother-in-law James (Jim) Weaver. She was also preceded by grandparents Clark and Amanda McCulley Vitatoe and George and Cathy Roe Reed. Mother and father-in-law Warren and Kathleen Petrey Haydon.

Shirley is survived by her brother James Bailey Reed Sr. and wife Betty Norris Reed; niece  Jamie Reed Spiney and husband Johnny Spiney; nephews Jim Reed and Donald Keith Reed and wife Marcia Godsey Reed; great nieces Chelse Brianna Reed, Kayla Brook Reed and Lacey Tannette Reed Mosley and husband Justin (Mo) Mosley; great-great niece Cayleah Lynn Hartman and great-great nephews Braylon Drake Loden and Ethan Justin Mosley. 

She also leaves behind dear friends Pat and Cora Duncan family and Sharon Tucker Wilson of Oliver Springs.

As per her requests, there will be no visitation or services.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Spring City Lions Club, P.O. Box 684, Spring City, Tennessee 37381 in her memory.
