RCHS Golfer Matthew Rothwell Earns Region Championship

Rothwell Doubles Up After Winning District Championship Previous Week

10/2/21

Cleveland, TN -- Matthew Rothwell earned the Region Championship in the Region Tournament held at Cleveland Golf and Country Club recently. Rothwell was in the first group to Tee off and finished with a one-shot lead with a one over par 73. Rothwell kept warm in case he had to play in a playoff, but he withstood the challenge and his lead held up and he had earned his second tournament championship within a week. One week before the Region, he had outlasted the field to earn the medalist honer with his 75 in the 18 hole course at Chatta Valley Course in Cleveland. What a difference a week makes, as in district tournament, it was a all day rain that left most golfers soaked. At the region tournament, it was very nice sun filled day. So no matter what the weather, Rothwell weathered the field and picked up wins in both events. Griffin Law of East Hamilton, finished second with a 74. Two other golfers finished in the third and fourth position to advance to the State Tournament played at the Sevierville Golf Club. Ian Kinsley of Walker Valley and Owen Kruger of Ooltewah picked up the two remaining individual awards to advance to the tournament. Kruger won his spot after battling Walker Valley's Coddy Skipper in a playoff that went to the fourth hole before Kruger picked up the win. The Tournament will be played on Monday and Tuesday, October 4th and 5th for 1-AA AND 2-AA. Rothwell will tee-off on Monday at 9:17 am.
