DCS Football Wins Conference Championship

Sweatbees Win 14-12 Over Onieda For TMSAA Championship

Jacksboro, TN -- The Dayton City School football team won the Middle Tennessee Football Conference Championship with their hard fought 14-12 win over Oneida on the campus of Fort Campbell High School in Jacksboro on Saturday, November 2, 2019.

DCS won the toss but defered and DCS kicked off. Oneida brought the kick back to 39 yard line. 22 yard pass put Oneida in Swatebee territory at the 39 yard line. Oneida drove all the way down to 18 of DCS, but drive ended in the hands of Ethan Davis on interception at the 9 yard line. Davis had nice run to outside to the 26 yard line and and Rex Pendergrass picked up first down at the DCS 35 yard line. Oneida had a tackle for a big loss to put DCS in a hole to force the punt from thier own 24 yard line. Dupre's punt had a short return to the DCS 40 yard line. Onieda had nice run to the DCS 31 just before first quarter ended. Oneida had a nice 25 yard run to setup shop at the Sweatbee 3 yard line with first and goal. Running back T. J. Meredith took the ball in for touchdown, but two point conversion was thwarted by middle of Bee defensive line and with 6:53 left in half, Oneida had the 6-0 lead. Dayton City brought the kick back to the 28 yard line. Davis had nice run to midfield called back on penalty, but personal fould on Oneida took the ball to the DCS 41. DCS picked up another first down on a penalty at 48. Davis found some open real estate on the outside and picked up first down at the 40. Big pass play took the Sweatbees down to the Indian's 25 yard line. A bad snap close to goal line put the Bees back to 9 but DCS pushed the ball up to the 3 and had 4th and goal from there with 1:37 left in the half. Rex Pendergrass took the Bryce Dupre handoff and barelled into end zone for the tying score. Oneida snuffed the two point conversion to keep the score at 6-6 late in first half but penalty took Indiants back to their own 25.

On the kick, Oneida brought the ball back across midfield, but penalty set the Indians back to 26 yard line. DCS defense held Oneida in check as time run out on first half with 6-6 tie.

Dayton got the ball first to open the second half beginning on their own 24 yard line. Didn't take long for the fireworks. On the first play from scrimmage, Rex Pendergrass broke through the line and rambled 76 yards for the touchdown. Ethan Davis then scored the two point conversiton in what would be the winning margin.

Oneida began the next drive on their own 37 yard line. Indians had one nice run to the 44, but Sweatbee defense stiffened and Oneida to off a nice punt that rolled dead at the DCS eleven yard line. Sweatbees never got any momentem on the drive and punted after three plays to Oneida. Oneida fumbled the punt but recovered and began play at the DCS 48 yard line.

Dayton paid the price for short punt as on the second play of the series, Oneida hit the 29 yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 14-12. Now was time for the very important extra point attempt. The middle of the DCS line stopped the runner and Dayton City held on to their 14-12 lead.

Dayton City began their possession at their own 35 yard line. On second play of the drive Dayton fumbled and Indians recoverd on the 34 yard line of Dayton City School. Hold put the ball back to DCS 36 yard line as time expired for the third quarter. Oneida faced a 4th and short around the DCS 31 yard line. Defense held and Bees were first and ten at their own 35 yard line.

Dayton City held Oneida in the fourth quarter and a late interception by Ethan Davis sealed the win on desperation heave by Oneida. Great win by DCS in a real battle with Oneida. Great effort by Oneida but the big 76 yard run by Pendergrass definitely was the highlight of the game.

Five Datyon City School players were named to All-Conference. Those were Ethan Davis, Bryce Dupre, Rex Pendergrass, Ace Robinson and Christian Moreno.
