Margaret Williams Swafford, age 86, of Dayton, passed away at her home on Sunday, November 10, 2024. She was born in Hamilton County, Tennessee, on Old McDonald’s Farm on August 3, 1938, the daughter of the late Jesse and Mildred (Howerton) Williams. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William “Sonny” Swafford, Sr. in 2016.
Margaret was a 1957 graduate of Carver High School in Dayton, attended one year of trade school, traveled many places with her military husband, was employed by Kayser Roth, was a volunteer at Rhea Medical Center for 18 years where she was Gray Lady of the Year, and helped raise her siblings. She was president of the Carver Alumni Association and was president and treasurer of the choir at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was a member.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Tammy (Guy) Swafford-Frazier of Anderson, South Carolina; her sons, William “Bill” (Sharese) Swafford, Jr. of Granger, Indiana, and Byron (Shannon) Swafford of Dayton, TN; her grandchildren, Jaleen, Elayne, and Cyrus; her great grandchildren, Zekarii and Jayden; her brother, Robert (Linda) Williams of Mesquite, Texas; her adopted brother, Johnny Downs; her adopted son, Jeff Floyd; her aunt, Katherine Howerton; trusted cousin and friend, Catherine Tullos; special niece, Jeannette Brown; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Margaret will be in the funeral home chapel on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. with Rev. Julian Smith officiating. She will be laid to rest with her husband at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
